Room 516, Tuesday Morning

Roscoe woke up to a long string of text messages from his grandpa that he tried responding to before he ultimately got bored trying and forgot about it. He was more interested in spending his day in other ways, like laying on his stomach with his tablet on his bed, browsing through online shoe stores.

Look, it was fall. He needed new boots. It was important.

He had a nicely creepy Halloween playlist playing in the background, getting him in that mood. Pumpkin spice and spooky scary songs and boot shopping, it was a whole thing.

Roscoe had bad taste, so he laughed loudly at the bad pun. "Great. Add to cart," he narrated, decisively tapping the corresponding button on the tablet. "I'm kinda excited to do some fall shopping. I've never lived anywhere with, like, seasons before," he shared.

"Anyway, what's up?"

"West coast kids," Dante said, shaking his head. Then he grinned. "So did you know your big sib has her birthday around now?"

"Guilty," Roscoe sing-songed. The west coast was the best coast, don't lie. "Shit, really? What's the plan?"

"Iiii was wondering if you wanted to put a dent in your asshole dad's credit card and rent some carnie crap for the party warehouse," Dante said.

That was less of a grin and more of a smirk.

"You came to the right place," Roscoe said, scrambling to sit up and patting the space next to him for Dante to come over. He quickly swiped out of the shoe shopping site and opened a new tab to start doing some research in. "Does she know about it?"

"She knows I'm throwing her a party, but not what or when yet," Dante said, sinking down on the bed next to him. "Saw a bunch of places that do like, blow-up midways and stuff."

"Ooh, yeah," Roscoe said, tabbing out one contender, and then another and another. "Holy shit, look at that thing. You think Ada wants to hang on to a bucking shark? It's maybe a little more 'beach party' than 'carnival' but it's all the same umbrella, right?"

"Okay, we definitely need that first one," Dante said. At the shark, he cackled. "Oh, no, we need it," he said. "Put carnival lights on anything, it fits in, right?"

"Definitely," Roscoe agreed. "Oh shit, you know what else we have to get ahold of? Whatever carnies drink. Authenticity."

It would probably corrode his entire liver but it would be worth it.

"Possibly including that thing."

He was having way too much fun with this and it was pretty much guaranteed that he was going to get a lot of angry texts from his grandpa after he made all these purchases, but hey, your school-assigned big sibling you'd only known for six months only turned...whatever age she was turning... once, right?

"Oh, fuck yes," Dante snickered. "It probably tastes like ass but who fucking cares, right?"

He leaned over to eye the set-up some more. "Oh, and we need to get one of those LED lamp things that rotate and show stars and shit," he said. "And ask everyone to come sparkly."

"Yes! I'll order a shit-ton of cans of glitter to leave by the door," Roscoe agreed, delighted.

"And we should edge it up a little, you know? It can't all be kids' games. Or it can, but that would be boring." He found another site and gasped. "Oh my god, Dante."

Dante blinked.

And then he cracked up.

"I dunno," he said, "That might get your creditcard all tied up." Beat. "Fuck, we should dump some mattresses in the office in the warehouse."

"Probably," Roscoe agreed. "We can just grab those from unused dorm rooms, I bet. Fuck, Ada is so lucky. How many people get an orgy for their birthday?"

Dante snickered. "Bet she'd be up for that," he said, waggling his eyebrows. "You wanna order a bunch of these things and we'll set up Thursday morning?"

Beat.

"Maybe leave the dildo one until later at night."

"Hey, I'm game if she doesn't mind the school-assigned incest of it all," Roscoe teased. "Yeah, I'll get on that. I'm sure the delivery guys are gonna love lugging all this crap over the causeway on foot. But hey, maybe if they're hot they can stick around and join the fun."

"Warehouse district's not that far from the causeway anyway," Dante said, shrugging. "They'll live. Or I'll just have to haul shit."

He'd probably be faster.

"I'm down to watch and make lewd comments," Roscoe offered, smirking. "Or lend a hand, but the first way is guaranteed to be more entertaining."

Nah, he'd help, but he'd still make lewd comments anyway.

"I like your lewd comments better anyway," Dante said, smirking. "And I'm pretty sure I can lift more."

"Probably," Roscoe agreed happily enough. "My version of lifting is, like, half-assed bicep curls with ten-pound weights to impress a date during a Netflix-and-chill. I'm more about the show-offy exercise."

His dad had called it 'curls for the girls. Or guys. Whatever gender.' It was pretty accurate.

"And I had to learn how to fight," Dante said, skirting around the whats and hows and the little niggling detail where he was stronger than any human could be no matter what exercise they did. "Though it helps with dates too."

"Had to, huh?" Roscoe said. Lightly, but still. He was a little curious.

Dante shrugged. "We don't all have rich daddies to watch our backs," he said.

"Fair enough," Roscoe said, with a sheepish grin that was less than a hundred percent genuine. The comment stung, even though he knew it was objective fact and shouldn't bother him. "Hey, maybe we should get one of those sets of inflatable boxing gear so you can practice."

Dante liked Roscoe. He didn't exactly like pointing this shit out. But sometimes... fuck.

Keep it light, yes.

"Or fake sumo," he suggested.

For all his self-confidence, Roscoe didn't always get himself so well. Like being totally blind to how privileged he came across until someone made a comment about it.

"Or those big clear inflatable wheels you can run around in and bump into people," he said. "Probably not the best thing to try drunk, though. I feel like it'd be too easy to get dizzy and barf."
